Gateway of India Sea Stunt Video Goes Viral as Man Battles Rough Monsoon Waves After Diving Into Arabian Sea
A viral video from Mumbai’s Gateway of India shows Mohammad Nazim Shaikh performing a backflip into rough monsoon waters and struggling against powerful waves before safely escaping with the help of a rope. The incident has sparked debate over dangerous sea stunts, safety warnings, and Shaikh’s reputation as a local rescuer who has reportedly saved hundreds of lives.
The video, originally shared on Instagram by Nazim Shaikh, showed him jumping from the protective wall at the Gateway of India into the turbulent waters. Shortly after entering the sea, Shaikh was seen fighting strong waves and currents while trying to swim towards a nearby ramp.
The footage showed him making repeated attempts to reach the ramp, but powerful currents continued to push him away. As the situation became critical, he managed to grab a rope attached near the ramp and held onto it tightly before pulling himself out of the water safely.
The video quickly went viral, with several users criticizing the act as a highly risky stunt that could have resulted in a fatal outcome if anything had gone wrong. Many questioned the need to perform such dangerous actions during hazardous sea conditions.
“If that rope wasn’t there, he’d be donezo,” wrote one user.
“He is a super man. But why is he doing this daily?” another user questioned.
Another user commented that the growing obsession with social media views and appearing impressive online has caused people to ignore the importance of their own safety. The user said that jumping into a powerful sea for a stunt could have ended tragically and warned that ocean waves do not spare anyone.
“Ocean currents are no joke for even athlete swimmers,” another individual stated.
However, some users defended Shaikh, claiming that he is an experienced local rescuer who is familiar with the waters around the Gateway of India and was not attempting the act only for attention.
One user said, “Hey bro, this is Nazim Shaikh—he’s saved hundreds of people from drowning with this very skill of his. You’ve got the wrong idea; he doesn’t get stuck like that—he just leaps around like this every day, sir.”
Mohammad Nazim Shaikh, a vada pav seller by profession, is widely recognised for rescuing people from drowning near the Gateway of India. According to users, he has saved more than 300 lives over the past 16 years through his rescue efforts.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of entering the sea during extreme monsoon conditions and the importance of following safety warnings issued by authorities. While Shaikh’s rescue abilities have earned recognition among locals, the viral video has raised concerns about taking unnecessary risks in unpredictable ocean conditions.
